Still, the Civil War titles, the oldest of which is now seven years old, are much more polished as to their features and presentation.Director and famous cinematographer Manmohan Singh is back once again with a super duper hit Dil Apna Punjabi, the movie is a delight to watch and something that everyone can relate to. Also, play it in HITS mode and SOW: Waterloo transforms from a game into a brilliant early 19th century command-and-control combat simulator.Īlso, it does have some added features that were not in the Civil War titles such as working skirmishers (they were just for "show" in the Civil War games), the square formation, and the ability to garrison buildings.

No PC game has the ability to have tens of thousands of troops with hundreds of cannons fighting it out on accurate maps with accurate OOBs and chains-of-command. No games on the market can compete with it in recreating the 19th century battlefield. SOW: Waterloo still has a lot to commend it. Maybe if its publisher had allowed its developers to port over the Civil War titles' UI and features and then concentrate heavily on tweaking the combat system and AI to reflect Napoleonic combat then things may have worked-out better.

SOW: Waterloo and its DLC appear to have been sales busts and may have killed the SOW series which is a shame. And the campaign system has been pretty much dropped from further development. The new UI was a diaster that frustrated and annoyed loyal SOW players and failed to draw-in new fans. Both these two design efforts turned-out to be dead-ends. One can see where Waterloo's development efforts were placed: "updating" the UI and including a "campaign" system that turned-out to be a glorified quick battle generator. Some of these features were eventually included in the game by patches, but not up to the standards and quality that one will find them in the Civil War titles. Upon its release, SOW: Waterloo was missing post-battle AAR screens, did not have a quick glance OOB screens, did not have "go to this map location" order in the couriers menu, and its replay feature had its unit icons decked-out in Yankee blue and Rebel gray. Plus, the new RTS UI features, which apparently took-up an immense amount of time and effort to develop, are useless for players who use SOW's terrific "headquarters-in-the-saddle (HITS)" mode which is where these games really shine.

As a SOW: Gettysburg player, I found it so frustrating to use that the only thing that saved Waterloo on my harddrive was a semi-official UI mod called the Expanded Toolbar. It's been streamlined almost to the point of uselessness.
Waterloo's vanilla UI is awful in comparison to Civil War games. The result was a game that is far less polished than its American Civil War predecessors and missing numerous features that were in the older titles.
Also, allegedly its publisher demanded significant changes to the UI that it felt would make the game more attractive to younger RTS gamers. Sadly, SOW: Waterloo's development was rushed to meet a fixed deadline of release by the 200th anniversary of the battle.
